SAVE THE BRIDGE!!!
The City of Argyle is asking for your help in saving Argyle's Historic Great Northern Pedestrian Bridge. The bids to remove and redo the piles for the bridge came in at $47,000.00 for metal piles filled with concrete, and $44,00.00 for timber piles. The cost of the crane, operator, and materials to make the bridge a safe and accessible vehicle to cross the river is too much for the City to spend at this time, so the bridge was removed from the park until funding for the project is secured.
Argyle's Historic Great Northern Railroad Pedestrian Bridge, installed across
the Middle River in 1979, was in danger of falling into the river after many
years of flood waters. The bridge, purchased by the Argyle Historical
Society for $110.00 for the City of Argyle in 1978, was the only link between
the John Kurz Memorial Park (Lion's Park) and the Historic Loranger Log Cabin
site. The bridge was removed from the river on March 10, 2011. Otter
Tail Power Company and Wiktel provided donations that enabled the removal of the
bridge from the river.
Argyle's Historic Great Northern Railroad Pedestrian Bridge is featured in a book titled, Smalltown Minnesota A to Z by Tony Anderson. Framed photographs and paintings of the bridge can be found in hotels and businesses around Minnesota, which includes the bridge on the Argyle location, has been purchased at craft fairs around Minnesota.
